History of Mahabaleshwar

Mahabaleshwar

The history of Mahabaleshwar can be traced back to 1215. It is when King Singhan visited Mahabaleshwar and built a small temple. Then this region was ruled by a Brahmin dynasty for sometime. But by 16th century, the Marathas took over the power and started ruling Mahabaleshwar.

Sir Charles Malet – a resident of the Pune darbar (1791) is assumed to be the first among the Europeans to visit the plateau of Mahabaleshwar. Then later in 1828, Sir John Malcolm, an English governor came to this place. After him, this plateau region came to be known Malcolm Peth for sometime till it was named as Mahabaleshwar. In 1829 Mahabaleshwar was designed to be a health resort by Maharaja Pratapsinha of Satara.
