An Introduction to Guwahati

Guwahati is one of the important cities of Assam which is situated in the north eastern part of India. Guwahati was previously known Pragjyotishpur which means the “City of Eastern Light”. In Assam Guwahati is one of the biggest cities of the state. Guwahati is considered to be the gateway to seven states situated in the north eastern part. This city is one of the major tourist attractions in Assam.

Guwahati - its Historical and Mythological Importance


According to the mythological references, Guwahati acted as the capital of many ancient kingdoms at different points of time. It is believed that King Bhagadatta and Naraka, two mythological kings ruled Guwahati. According to the historical evidences, Guwahati was under the Pala and Varman dynasties. Later it came under the domination of the Mughals. By this time, the domination of the city was divided between two powers. The eastern part went to the Ahom protectorate and the rest to the Mughals. The Battle of Saraighat is an historically important battle fought in Guwahati among the Mughals and the Assamese force. The Mughals were badly defeated in the hands of the local army of Assam.
