An Introduction to the 'City of Joy' – Kolkata

Kolkata is a city of rich cultural heritage. Previously the city was known by its anglicized name - Calcutta. It bears a long history and was under the colonial rule of the British. The documented history of the city is recorded from the arrival of the East India Company in 1690. They came from England in order to consolidate their trade in Bengal. Job Charnock, an administrator of the company is considered as the founder of Kolkata.

After the completion of Fort William in 1702, Kolkata was declared as a Presidency City and in the later years, it was made the head quarter of the Bengal Presidency. In 1772 the city of Kolkata was made the capital of British India. India regained its control from the British dominance in 1947 and Kolkata was also freed from the bondage of English rule.
